The Joy Mandarin Center offers competitive pricing for their one-on-one classes, and are found to be priced lower than many of their competitors in Beijing. Management is also willing to negotiate on price if you wish to shell out for a package (over 20 hours). Plus, the Center also offers a service in which the tutor can come to your house or office for a small additional fee.
Joy Mandarin Center is located 100 metres down the road from the American Embassy in Liangmaqiao so it’s very easy to locate. The subway station is a short five minute walk from the school. The Center is in proximity to a large number of multinational companies, embassies, and Chambers of Commerce. European, German, Swiss and other national Chamber networking events are regularly held in the area.
Due to the huge number of Chinese language schools in Beijing, and competition from the well-known universities in Beijing, Joy Mandarin is not exactly well known by the foreign community. However, the school is widely attended by embassy staff located in the vicinity and comes well rated by former students.
The school itself is quite small but most private language schools are similar in this manner (blame the exorbitant Beijing rent!). The classrooms are small but adequate, and each room is equipped with a large whiteboard. The staff working at the school are friendly and accommodating towards students, and will always make you a fresh cup of Chinese tea to keep you motivated and alert during class. The teachers are also very kind and have a habit of bringing in Chinese snacks for students as a treat. The students who attend, often full-time professionals, inject a more studious culture into the Center than would be found in Wudaokou.
As mentioned, because the Center is in proximity to a large number of multinational companies, embassies, and Chambers of Commerce there is certainly scope to work and intern while attending classes at the Center. There are also a number of expat networking events held in the area.
Asia Options Verdict
Asia Options recommends this school to both full time Chinese learners and expats working or interning in Beijing. The competitive pricing means that foreigners residing in China (on a valid visa) can afford to have regular one-on-one classes. Also, the option of the teacher coming to your office is handy for expats located in central Beijing who would like to have class in their lunch break or before work. Overall, Asia Options highly recommends this school!
